Just Who Is the Holy Spirit Anyway?

Holy Spirit is not a Ghost. He is a person. Scripture tells us He thinks, speaks, leads, and is grieved.

He is also described as, Spirit of Christ, Spirit of Jesus, or in effect Jesus’ other self.

He is the paraclete, one called alongside, counselor, comforter, encourager; or, to put it another way He is just like Jesus.

He is eternal. We see evidence of His existence if the opening pages of scripture, Genesis 1:1,2. The "Spirit of God hovered over the waters."

So, God’s breath gave man life. "He formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils, man then became a living being."

The Hebrew word, Ruach, means breath of God, or Spirit of God. God breathed His Spirit into Adam.

Adam was the first man to be filled with the Spirit. As we can plainly see from the history of Adam, being filled does not take away our will. Turning our will over to Him takes a life long commitment.

Who Is Holy Spirit?

Robbie L. Rogers

In the Old Testament Holy Spirit, brought creativity alive in certain individuals, Exodus 31:2-5. It is definitely possible to be creative without having the anointing of Holy Spirit; yet, any creative person will tell you when filled with the Spirit their work takes on an entirely new and greater dimension. How many have died seeking that same level of creativity though drugs, alcohol and other depraved in differences? With God it is simply a gift.

The Spirit fell on many people in the old testament for specific purposes. He does so today, but even more so to those who believe that God sent His only Son to die on the cross for our sins and who accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. In doing so Holy Spirit breaths new live into them, the same today as He did in the old Testament. Just as He set Samson free from the bindings that held him prisoner, that he might do God’s work of destroying the Philistines, He also will break us free from the bindings of sin and addiction, if we will let Him.

Before I gave my life to Christ, I often felt hopeless, lost and confused when confronted with the difficult things of life. I wondered what it was all about, thinking everything was pointless and how my life was useless. Through Christ’s teaching and Holy Spirit’s guidance I see things differently now. I have much to give. Things, though often difficult, are much clearer now.

Yes bad things still happen to good people; but, the Spirit of God indeed gives us the way to bind up the brokenness of those who suffer, including ourselves. If we expect to help people, in such a way as to eternity, we can only do so effectively in and through Holy Spirit’s guidance. If we try on our own, we may make a difference; but, with Him... the difference is eternity.

Jeremiah 31:33 tells us "I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts." The old Testament is full of God’s promises and his love, yet it is full of man’s attempt at making his way by legalism. The New Testament, or New Covenant writings, shows God’s compassion and mercy, giving us His ways written in our hearts, through Holy Spirit. Like Carrying food on your back for a long journey, as you consume it, your burden becomes lighter and you gain new strength. So too is they way in which God’s word leads us on and we find strength untold.

Now through Christ’s sacrifice, we receive Holy Spirit and His many blessing... Gifts. With such spiritual gifts we can do all things. "I will pour out My Spirit on all people, your sons will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days." Joel 2:28,29

Jesus was completely filled with the Spirit and promises the same for you today.

He is the same today as He was yesterday.

The same promise is for you.

No matter what you have done or said. All you need to do is repent, accepting that Jesus was who He said He was, the Son of God, and that He died for your sins, asking for forgiveness... receive it and you will be changed.
